When to visit Tiananmen Square
The square is open-air, so the weather matters more here than at an indoor sight. The climate figures below suggest that April and May and September and October are the better months for a long walk outside. Winter is cold and dry, and July and August are hot with the heaviest rain. No month promises clear air, mild weather or small crowds.
The season also changes what you can visit. The National Museum and the gate towers run on summer and winter hours, and the flag ceremony moves with the sunrise. If you want a guided day, see our Tiananmen Square tours and plan the date around the hours further down.

Season by season
What to expect, based on the climate figures and the visiting rules.
Spring (March to May)
March is still cold at night. April and May are mild, with little rain. Dust and sand episodes do occur in spring, so do not count on clear air.
Summer (June to August)
July and August bring highs near 30 °C and the heaviest rain of the year, 176 and 182 mm on average. The sun rises early, which pulls the flag ceremony into the small hours.
Autumn (September to October)
Temperatures fall to a comfortable range and the rain eases. The National Day holiday at the start of October is the exception, with the biggest crowds of the season.
Winter (November to February)
Cold and dry, with January highs that average only 1.6 °C. The sun rises later, so the flag ceremony is later too, but plan for the cold while you wait outdoors.

Holidays, crowds and the flag ceremony
Public holidays are the busiest days of the year.
The National Day Golden Week starts on 1 October and lasts about a week. At such times the square can change its opening arrangements, and the waiting times can be long. If your dates are flexible, avoid the holidays. No month comes with a promise of a quiet day.
The flag raising follows the daily sunrise, and the lowering follows the sunset, both calculated for the place. Look up the time for your date and do not rely on a fixed hour. You book the raising and the lowering as separate slots, and nothing guarantees a view. The flag ceremony page explains the booking. If you plan other sights of Beijing in the same trip, the seasons are covered at the Forbidden City and Mutianyu.
