Where to stay near Tiananmen Square
The square lies in the district of Dongcheng, and so does the National Museum. Many hotels in Beijing carry that district name, but Dongcheng is a large area. The name alone says nothing about how close a hotel is to the entry checkpoint or how long the walk takes. Search by metro station instead.
This page compares two search areas: Wangfujing and Qianmen, the latter south of the square. It does not list single hotels, room prices or ratings. If you also want a guided day from your base, see our Tiananmen Square tours, and read how the entry works on the reservation page.

Wangfujing or Qianmen: the two areas compared
Both have a metro station, shops and places to eat. The difference is the line and the side of the square.
| Wangfujing | Qianmen and Dashilar | |
|---|---|---|
| Metro | Line 1 | Line 2 and Line 8 |
| Character | Pedestrian shopping zone | Historic trading and dining district |
| Side of the square | โ | South |
| Link to the north stations | Same line: Line 1 (Tiananmen East and West) | Different lines: Line 2 and Line 8 |
| Nearby sights | The square and the museum, by Line 1 | Zhengyangmen, Qianmen Street, Dashilar |
| Early trains | โ | Line 2 from 05:16, Line 8 from 05:23 |
For most visitors whose main goal is the square, Wangfujing is the simpler base, because Line 1 runs to the Tiananmen stations without a change. Choose Qianmen if you want the south end, the old shopping streets and two metro lines. Neither area comes with a guaranteed view of the square or the ceremony, and room quality varies by hotel.

Wangfujing
The pedestrian shopping zone on Line 1.
Wangfujing is a well-known pedestrian and shopping area with its own metro station on Line 1. That is the same line that serves Tiananmen East and Tiananmen West. For a base, this means a single line to the north side of the square and to the National Museum.
Treat it as a search area, not as a promise about the current hotels, the walk or the noise. Before you book, check the distance from the room to the station exit on a map.

Qianmen and Dashilar
South of the square, a trading and dining district.
Qianmen lies south of the square. It is a historic area for shopping and eating, with Dashilar just west of Qianmen Street. The station Qianmen is on Line 2 and Line 8. This makes it a good search area if you want the south end, the Zhengyangmen Gate and the shopping streets on the same trip. For those sights see the Qianmen page.
A base here gives you the early trains for the flag ceremony from Qianmen, at 05:16 on Line 2 and 05:23 on Line 8. These are departures from the station, not a promise about your arrival time, so count the walk and the security queue as well.
What to check before you book
The hotel list is yours to make. These points help you narrow it down.
The walk to the station
Measure the distance from the hotel to the nearest exit on a map, not the distance to the square. Add the entry check on the day.
Your dates
The square reservation opens only days ahead, 1 to 7 days. Fix your hotel dates first, then book the slot. See the best time page for the season.
Early starts
For the sunrise ceremony, ask how early you can leave. The ceremony time changes with the sunrise, so look at the flag ceremony page.
Views and quiet
Do not book on the promise of a view of the square, and ask about noise on the street side before you pay.
Staying longer in Beijing
Other bases for other sights.
If your trip centers on the palace or the temples, the area around them may suit you better. The Forbidden City has its own advice on where to stay at the Forbidden City guide, and the Temple of Heaven is covered at the Temple of Heaven guide. Where to stay near Tiananmen Square: frequently asked questions
Which area is best for Tiananmen Square?
Wangfujing on Line 1 and Qianmen on Lines 2 and 8 are the two search areas on this page. For most visitors whose main goal is the square, Wangfujing is simpler because Line 1 reaches Tiananmen East and West without a change.
Is a hotel in Dongcheng close to the square?
Not necessarily. The square and the National Museum are in Dongcheng, but it is a large district, and the name does not tell you the distance to the checkpoint. Look at the walk from the metro station.
Can I get a room with a view of the square?
You cannot count on it. A view of the square or the flag ceremony is not something to book on, so choose the hotel for its location and its metro station.
Should I stay in Qianmen for the sunrise flag ceremony?
It can work. The first trains at Qianmen leave at 05:16 on Line 2 and 05:23 on Line 8. Count the walk and the security queue, and look up the sunrise time for your date.
Do I book the hotel or the square slot first?
Fix the hotel dates first. The square reservation opens only days ahead, 1 to 7 days, and it needs the passport you will use at the entrance.
Is tiananmen-square.org the official site?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It has no link to any authority, the National Museum, the administration of the square, a hotel or a tour operator.
